For all young people to experience, enjoy and excel in high quality physical education and school sport and to develop the motivation for lifelong participation.
The aim of the Physical Education Programme at Scissett Middle is to provide opportunities to participate in physical activities which are conducive to a healthy lifestyle. We aim for all young people to develop the physical, cognitive and social competence and confidence to enable them to enjoy a range of physical activities and lead healthy active lifestyles.
Pupils will follow a varied curriculum throughout Years 6, 7 and 8, taught by a team of specialist PE teachers. Through Physical Education, we aim to build confidence, allow pupils to be creative, competitive and understand the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Key Stage 2
At Key Stage 2 pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 pupils build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Assessment in PE
In Physical Education at Scissett Middle School we use core tasks to assess pupils’ progress
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) described core task activities as ‘an opportunity to use what students have learned through the unit in an authentic context that is suitably challenging for their age and ability’. The core tasks, therefore, are aimed to aid in the assessment of pupil’s performance in Physical Education.
Students in Years 6, 7 and 8 will complete progressive core tasks in a range of activity areas, namely;
All pupils will have completed appropriate swimming activities at KS2 at First School Prior to arriving at Scissett Middle School.
Ofsted November 2013
The additional Primary School Sports funding is used to supplement the school's existing and extensive collaborative work to promote pupils' participation in sport. Pupils of all ages are very positive about these opportunities and the vast majority are involved in sport outside their normal lessons.
