Year 8

Year 8 STEM Club

5th October 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian

The Year 8 STEM club is beginning soon and will run on Wednesday lunchtimes, initially based in the Science Department. The focus, to begin with will be on electronics. The club will begin on 17th October and will run each lunchtime until further notice.

The first session of STEM will focus on electronics. Pupils will be learning how to use a soldering iron so that, working with a partner they will build four electronics project kits. These will be an electronic dice, LED lamp kit, automatic air freshener and a programmable “music box”, which they will be able to share and take home at the end of the club’s duration. There is a nominal cost of £7.00 for this club which covers the cost of these kits. In accordance with the school’s policy, parents of pupils who do take part must be willing to meet the costs, or the club may not take place. Nevertheless, if cost is prohibitive, please contact me on the usual telephone number to discuss alternative arrangements. If your child is in receipt of free school meals the cost of the club will be covered by school. This club can also be paid online using Parent Pay.

School will provide soldering irons and all the other equipment needed.

Your child has expressed an interest in joining the STEM club; if you agree to their involvement, please complete the reply slip with payment or alternatively you can pay on Parent Pay as soon as possible. Places are limited, so a prompt reply may be necessary to secure your child’s place.

Yours sincerely

Private Peaceful Theatre Trip

19th September 2018

Dear Parents

As part of our broad and balanced curriculum we aim to offer at least one full year group trip each year. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to offer such a trip to last year’s Year 7 group. In lieu of this, we have organised an extra trip for this year group – our current Year 8’s – to go to ‘The Theatre Royal Wakefield’ to see Private Peaceful on Tuesday, 23rd October.

The play is being shown as part of the commemorations for the 100 anniversary of the end of WW1 and is direct from London’s West End. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo who is a popular author here at Scissett Middle School. This will be a cross curricular trip and will incorporate elements of History; Personal and Social development, English and Drama.

The performance begins at 1pm and so we will be leaving school at 12pm and will be back for the end of the school day. As we will be back in school before our usual home time, pupils will not be permitted to take their phone on the trip and will collect these on their return. Due to timings, children must bring a packed lunch on the day, but these may be ordered from the school kitchen in advance. If you would like to order a ‘Grab Bag’ please choose from the menu attached.

The cost of the trip is £13.75 and payment should be completed by Wednesday 3rd October. The cost includes the theatre ticket, coach travel and insurance. Participation in this visit is entirely voluntary and no pressure will be placed on any pupil to take part; however, in accordance with the school’s policy on educational visits, unless a substantial number of parents of participating pupils are willing to meet costs, the visit may not take place.

If your child is in receipt of free school meals, the entire cost of this trip will be met by the school and lunch will be provided on the day as usual. Also, if cost is prohibitive please contact us on the usual telephone number as you may be eligible to certain financial benefits.

Pupils are permitted to take a small amount of money should they wish to buy refreshments from the theatre during the interval. Alternatively, your child may want to bring a small bag of sweets and/ or a drink (no fizzy drinks, please) to consume during the interval and we would recommend no more than £5 should be taken in total.
We hope that this will be an enriching experience for the pupils.

Yours sincerely

Mrs McDonald

Meet The Tutor Evening

11th September 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,

Our next parents’ evening is a ‘Meet the Tutor’ event on Tuesday 25th September 2018 for Year 8. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher. A further Parents’ Evening where you meet their subject teachers will be held in December. During the evening there will be a short presentation, taking place every 30 minutes, explaining Year 7 & 8 reports and targets.

Go to http://www.parents-booking.co.uk/scissettmiddleschool or click on the link on the school website under ‘Parents’.

PLEASE NOTE: You need to type this address into your website browser’s ‘address bar’. Do not try to ‘Google’ this website address or use a search engine as that will not work. This is a common mistake on phones and tablets especially. There is also a link on the school website, under the parents’ section.

Login to see which appointments are available and select one that is convenient for you.

You will need:

• Your child’s first name and surname
• Your child’s date of birth
• Your email address

The system is live TODAY and will be open to take your bookings until 12pm on Monday 24th September. You can book for the Parents’ Evening as soon as you receive this letter.

Once you have logged in, we suggest you use the ‘Automated Booking’ wizard to make your appointment. You will be asked to enter your availability and choose the teacher you want to see before being shown available times for the night.

Troubleshooting Tips - please read before booking!

• To login you need to enter the details we have on record for you and your child. If you have recently changed your title or surname, for example, and not informed us, we will be expecting you to login with the details we have on record
• The email address you enter is only used to receive a confirmation of your appointment. If the system gives you an error when you login, it will not be the email address that is the problem
• If you have several children to make bookings for, use the ‘Change Child’ button on the blue bar (above the school’s name) in the very top left corner of the Parent’s Booking Page to swap between your children. This does not apply to the Booking Wizard, where your children are tabbed above the teacher names

If you are unable to book at home, please contact the school office and a member of staff will help you.

Yours sincerely
